Handmade Gampi Papers

Gampi bark yields a strong, crisp sheet that is translucent, with almost no visible fibers. There papers have a very smooth surface and a satin-like sheen that becomes even more apparent with the thinner sheets. Gampi papers are good for restoration, etching, ink, digital printing, as well as platinum printing, chine collé and more.

The Gampi bush is found in the mountainous, warm areas of Japan, growing to 1-1.5 meters in height. Gampi is more difficult than other fibers to clean (chiritori) and obtain as they cannot be cultivated, thus they tend to be the most expensive washi. Presently, Philippine Gampi is the most common Gampi imported from outside of Japan.
