Description:
Koinobori is a carp kite that is flown on Children’s Day, May 5, in Japan. We will use this unique, emoji-established symbol as a basis for exploring the wide range of art techniques in drawing, painting, and (simple) sculpting! I will guide you on how to design a paper Koinobori with as much or as little guidance as you like, with an introduction to color theory, various painting techniques, and creating a paper pattern for 3D design.
About the Instructor:
Shizuka Kusayanagi (b. 1982, Japan) is a multilingual, multidisciplinary artist, designer, and educator based in Los Angeles. She is dedicated to making the creative process more accessible and inclusive, challenging traditional hierarchies in the art world to encourage broader participation and authentic expression. In addition to her fine art painting practice, she founded Art for All Ages, a platform where she guides individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels to play, find their voice, and build healthy relationships with themselves and others through creative exploration. Shizuka also holds a certificate in leading trauma-informed healing arts workshops through the Social Emotional Arts (SEA) program from Arts & Healing Initiative. She currently teaches at a French-American elementary school while raising two children.
