Workshop Description:
The spring wind is tickling your nose and you are one hobby away from becoming a jack of all trades. Come join artist Yaeun Stevie Choi in decorating and constructing your own Korean fighter kite, banggoomeongyeon using handmade paper and handtrimmed bamboo. Each participant will choose between foam printmaking and painting for decoration, and develop essential kitemaking skills such as setting the bamboo spars onto the paper and tying the bowline and the bridle.

About the instructor:
Yaeun Stevie Choi (they/she) is a sculptural artist based in Koreatown, Los Angeles, who have been making, researching, and holding workshops on kites since their interest began in 2018. They specialize in building Korean kites through which they investigate human flight, affect, and diasporic personhood. They dedicate their kitemaking knowledge to the Korean kite masters in the online banggomeongyeon forum from whom they continue to learn from. Choi has facilitated or co-facilitated kite workshops with LACMA with Dajin Yoon, Clockshop, HOLA (Hearts of LA), Frieze London x Getty PST Art with Candice Lin, BVCLT (Beverly-Vermont Community Land Trust), Feminist Center for Creative Work with Silvi Naçi, and various schools and libraries. Choi was the Commissioned Kite Artist for Clockshop’s 4th Annual Community & Unity People's Kite Festival. They hold a B.A. from UCLA.
