Workshop Description:
Create an original notebook using bubble-dyed paper for the cover and bind it with a traditional chain stitch binding technique. Even those with no previous bookbinding experience are welcome to join this workshop.
[Chain stitch bookbinding]
Chain stitch bookbinding is a method of bookbinding in which all the pages and covers of a book are bound together using a single thread. This method allows a book to lay flat when opened, with a lot of flexibility. The chain stitch is originally a sewing and embroidery technique in which a series of looped stitches form a chain-like pattern.
[Bubble Dyeing]
Create organic patterns by blowing ink-and-soap bubbles through a straw. As the bubbles burst on the paper, they leave behind delicate and unique textures shaped by chance and movement.
About the instructor:
Yukie H. Ikuno
Born in Kobe. Moved to New York in 1990, working as a color retoucher for photographer Gregory Colbert. Driven by a passion for the craft, she studied bookbinding and papermaking at NY's Center for Book Arts (CBA), Dieu Donné, and Carriage House Paper, eventually designing the artist's art books.
Returned to Japan in 2013 to establish her current studio. Since then, she has been creating handmade paper themed around "regeneration," presenting her art in exhibitions, and sharing the craft through hand-bookbinding workshops.
