Workshop Description:
Over the years, Portland-based Mullowney Printing has earned a reputation for their innovative use of East Asian papers in printmaking, incorporating techniques such as chine collé, collage, and the backing and seaming of prints. This workshop has consistently been one of their most popular offerings, attracting printmakers, bookbinders, and photographers from all disciplines and we're excited to bring the workshop to Los Angeles.
Whether you're working in intaglio, monotype, photogravure, relief, letterpress, or screen printing, this immersive experience is designed to help you elevate your studio practice to the next level of expertise.
Led by Mullowney Printing founder and master printer Paul Mullowney, the workshop draws on decades of experience in traditional printmaking methods, with a focus on:
Chine Collé: The technique of simultaneously printing and adhering delicate East Asian papers onto heavier Western rag papers using the press.
Traditional Wheat Starch Paste: Preparation and application of this age-old adhesive for use in paper-based print techniques.
Japanese Pasting Tools: Instruction on using specialized Japanese brushes for pasting, smoothing, and joining papers in preparation for printing.
Layering Backing Materials: Techniques for adding structural support to fragile Japanese papers using various backing layers.
Problem-Solving Chine Collé Issues: Guidance on troubleshooting common challenges such as pressure, dampness, and stability, especially when working with very thin Japanese gampi papers.
This hands-on workshop is perfect for printmakers and artists who work with paper supports and are looking to resolve current challenges or explore new project ideas.
