Experience a rare moment of mindfulness that elevates the raw, geological beauty of nature into a work of art. In this workshop, you will step away from the bustle of daily life to heighten your senses; using a mortar and pestle, you will carefully crush natural stones to create rich, natural pigments. The soothing rhythm of grinding the stone, the textures woven by nature, and the authentic beauty of colors born from the earth come together to offer a deeply fulfilling artistic experience unlike any other. Come and step into the profound world of Nihonga Painting.
Makiko Berry is a contemporary Japanese-style (Nihonga) painter based in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture. Born in 1975, she graduated from the Japanese-style painting course at Seian University of Art and Design in 1998. The following year, she moved to the United States, where she gained international experience working in the Department of Asian Art Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and working at Hiromi Paper in California.
Upon returning to Japan in 2008, she launched "Nobinavi Art", an educational program designed to foster children's creative sensibilities. She also serves as an adjunct instructor at Kyoto University of Arts. Her artistic style combines traditional Nihonga materials—such as natural mineral pigments (iwa-enogu), Japanese ink (sumi), and animal-skin glue binder (nikawa) on Japanese paper (washi)—with modern sensibilities. Inspired by everyday scenery, childhood memories, and the natural satoyama landscape of Kyoto, her works explore daily life, identity, and the passage of time. Her recognition includes winning the Grand Prize at the 4th Kyoto New Japanese Painting Exhibition in 2012 and selection for the 8th and 9th Higashiyama Kaii Memorial Nikkei Japanese Painting Grand Prizes in 2021 and 2024.
