Amate is a paper made from the bark of the Jonote Tree in San Pablito, Puebla, Mexico, by a family of Otomi papermakers who have been making paper for three generations. The bark is pounded by hand with a special stone, and the bark grows back into the tree making it eco-friendly.

It has a unique texture and a thickness that makes it useful for book covers and other heavier applications. It can also be used for painting, drawing, box making, printmaking, and digital printing.
