Workshop Description:
Join us for a hands-on, creative exploration of the accordion fold bookbinding technique! In this 3- hour workshop, you will learn how to create a unique, functional book that folds like an accordion using amate paper, offering endless possibilities for storytelling, artwork, or journaling. This workshop is designed to inspire creativity and teach you the skills to make your own accordion-folded book from start to finish.
The workshop will also introduce you to the Mesoamerican bookmaking tradition which uses the accordion fold. Mesoamerica is a cultural region that encompasses Central Mexico to the northern part of Central America. The indigenous people of Mesoamerica made books using the accordion fold and amate paper to record their history, poetry, mythology, sacred calendar, astronomical events, religion, rituals, and more. Only a handful of books survived the Spanish invasion, but the surviving books continue to inspire Modern Mexico and Central America. Several facsimiles of the surviving books will be shown during the workshop.
About the instructor:
Israel is an interdisciplinary queer L.A. based artist that works with paintings, print media, digital media, and artist books. His work embraces the art tradition from Mesoamerica to explore how historical events are interconnected and reverberate into the present. He is a Chicano artist that investigates pre-Columbian iconography, generational myths, oral folklore, and contemporary pop culture to collapse the centuries separating the different artforms. His palette, depiction of the human body and surreal environments are influenced by surviving pre- Columbian codices, murals, and ceramic figurines to affirm his presence as a Chicano in the United States.
