    Workshop Description:

Join artist Kiyomi Fukui Nannery for an immersive day exploring the gentle art of white-line woodcut printing. Born on the shores of Provincetown, this uniquely American technique creates luminous, painterly prints where carved lines emerge as delicate white traces between pools of watercolor.

In this full-day workshop, participants will learn to transform a simple wooden block into a matrix of possibility—carving linear drawings that become the skeleton for multiple color applications. The press-less method allows for intimate connection with materials and process, much like its Japanese cousin, mokuhanga.

Each participant will complete their own white-line print on various Japanese papers, discovering how this century-old technique offers contemporary possibilities for artistic expression.

    About the instructor:
Kiyomi Fukui Nannery is a multidisciplinary artist and educator specializing in printmaking and natural pigment processes. Her work explores ecological awareness and cultural memory through traditional techniques reimagined with foraged materials. She currently teaches at California State University Long Beach and Golden West College, and has presented as a panelist at notable institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and USC Pacific Asia Museum. Her recent series "Ghosts of the Marsh," combining woodcut printing with cultivated pigments, reflects her ongoing investigation into environmental change and memory. Kiyomi actively conducts workshops throughout Southern California, sharing her expertise in experimental printmaking techniques and natural material processes.
